Batasan sa Bukidon: Visiting the Matigsalug, Umajamnon, and Talaandig ancestral domains

  • Northern Mindanao Philippines (map)

Team Balay Kasamtangan along with Datu Mark Aguiman, Dr. Eli Sajonia, Sir Peepow Belisario, and many other esteemed Bukidnon State University members were given the honor to be the first outsiders to witness the Lapëw Të Panuvaran, or the turnover of a Matigsalug tribal prayer house on the sacred Mt. Ilyan, guided by Basbasënën (Datu-in-the-making) Adey Ilagan. Arriving in the valley at night with rains drizzling, the team set off on a 4-hour trek across two roaring rivers and up the wet slopes of the mountain.

Following that, the group ventured to the rolling valleys of the Umajamnon tribe, reconnecting with Basbasënën Joco and revered elders Baë Namili and Datú Manggarin; forging deeper connections as they shared their struggles for reclamation of their ancestral lands.

The day after that, high energy was maintained as we walked through the halls of the Talaandig tribe, basking in the immense artistic talents of Baë Salima Saway and Baë Dayan, ending the day with a spirited dance led by the most well-known female warrior, Nanay Ipang.

Finally, the founders concluded their trip with a short stop at the Hiatus Coffee Outpost, taking a moment to process everything over a catch-up with Master Tres.
